15 free autumn activities

School holidays can be a very fun time for families. However, if your budget is tight, it can be stressful as well.

You do not want everyone to go crazy when it rains, but you also do not want to pay for zoo passes every day. Fortunately, there is a wide range of free activities for kiwi children, at home and beyond. Here are 15 free activities to entertain children during these holidays:

1. Visit a library Unlike most places, at the library, you can say yes to almost anything. Your child can choose a huge stack of books to bring home, all for free. Many libraries regularly organize free events around art, crafts, Lego, Minecraft and more.

2. Botanical Garden Picnics There are six botanical gardens in the country: Auckland, Hamilton, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Run, play and picnic – as well as familiarize yourself with the plants.

3. Discover a museum Perfect for a rainy day, many of our main museums are free.

4. Purchase art in a gallery Not all parts of a gallery will be suitable for children, but many art galleries are free to enter and offer free activities for children. Check out the events pages of your local gallery to find out what’s going on for families.
