Find the perfect retirement resort

More than 40,000 New Zealanders live in retirement villages – 13% of Kiwis aged 75 and over – and the rate is rising.

With approximately 400 villages to choose from, size, location, amenities and prices, how do you begin to determine which is best for you?

Think about the type of lifestyle you would like to retire. The size of retirement villages may vary from a small community to 500 units. The average size of a village in Auckland is 172 units, while outside Auckland, the average size is 78 units.

Paula Bishop, founder of Village Guide explains that some people thrive in large villages with many facilities, such as swimming pools, cafes, gyms and bowling. Others thrive in small villages with a more boutique atmosphere “Try to find a village that suits your ideal lifestyle,” Bishop advises.

Consider the location What are the priorities of your location: friends, family members, beach life, city life?

Writing a list of what is most important to you will allow you to specify your options. If you do not plan to drive, you must be close to public transport.

Decide on the level of care you want. Most retirement homes offer three levels of care: independent living (in a house or apartment), part-time care or daily assistance (in a serviced apartment) or 24-hour care. Skilled nurses and caregivers (in a care home), says Bishop.

“Ideally, you want to find a place where you can benefit from ongoing care, live independently and eventually increase your level of care as needed. You should consider the future if you do not want to move. ”

Find the Right Cultural Fit Visit four or five different villages before you decide. ask if you can participate in some of the activities.

Bishop says it’s a great way to get an idea of the village and its people: “Cultural adjustment is important. You want that feeling of belonging, that feeling that “These are my people and I belong here”. ”

Choose a residence and understand what you pay for. You will probably be able to choose between a villa or an apartment with one, two or three bedrooms; How much space do you need? Do you need a guest room? How much of your property will move in with you?

Prices may vary – sorted out a financial checklist that may be helpful in searching for your decision. Villas and apartments can be offered as title, occupancy license, cross-lease or lease for life; Always get legal advice to understand exactly what you are signing up for.

Whatever village is catching your eye, do not rush on it, says Bishop: “You want to trust the decision you make, so make an informed decision – do your research!
